adjective
语源
- late Middle English: from Old French, or from Latin centrum, from Greek kentron 'sharp point, stationary point of a pair of compasses', related to kentein 'to prick'
- The construction centre round or centre around (as opposed to center on) has been denounced as incorrect since it first appeared in the middle of the 19th century. The argument is that it is illogical, since ‘centre’ designates a fixed point and the prepositions around/round are not used to refer to fixed points. The use is very well established, however, and, given the extension of the sense away from geometrical exactitude, it is difficult to sustain the argument that it is incorrect. A quarter of the citations in the Oxford Reading Programme for this sense are for the construction centre around/round
